• The image of two horse-mounted male Chicago Police officers (racial features not discernable) overlooking an African American female passerby struck me as a descriptive of our Great City - both past and present.  She casts a concerned look their way as they peer down at her and the downtown flow of pedestrian and motor traffic. The power dynamic/disfunction could not be more evident. They are high, she is low. They are armed, she carries a purse. The are Strong, she is Weak. The soundtrack of "Old Man" Daley, 1968 and Laquan McDonald still echos in our ears and throughout our streets as we grapple with the challenges of race, economic fairness and public safety. It is a sad legacy that we ourselves struggle to overcome and the world does not let us forget.  What were these three Chicagoans thinking as they eyed each other? Was there grace or suspicion in their hearts at that moment - or both simultaneously?  Or perhaps neither ... Just another random moment on a random day, on a random street corner, in one of the World's great Metropolises?
