• This shot captivated me because it so beautifully displays one of the essential elements of great photography: contrast. The pedestrian glued to their modern smartphone smack dab in front of one of Chicago’s best-known landmark historic buildings. The Marshall Field and Company nameplate basking in sunlight while the rest of Randolph Street remains in the shadows. I want to remind this passerby – who may be checking the latest on social media– that this massive granite structure has its own storied place in popular culture. It’s where Frango mints were once made, where the Walnut Room Christmas tree served as a backdrop for many a family holiday photo long before Instagram and TikTok. Perhaps I love this photo because it underscores what I really admire about this city, my now adopted hometown of 25 years. While Chicago is deeply rooted in its culture and tradition, it has always embraced innovation and change.
